Phantom Heli-Skiing
Four skiers, one guide, one helicopter and 247,000 acres of Sea to Sky backcountry
Phantom Heli-Skiing is owned and run by local mountain guides, and it is built around one idea: small groups. Four guests and a guide per helicopter, no queue on the landing, no waiting for a group of ten to regroup at the bottom. Flying with aviation partner Black Tusk Helicopters, Phantom holds tenure over 247,000 acres of glaciers, alpine bowls and tree runs in the Coast Mountains between Whistler and Squamish.
Packages run from a guaranteed six-run day to fully private and semi-private helicopters, with a heli-assisted ski touring option for people who want to earn some of their turns. Days depart from the Black Tusk base near Squamish, about twenty-five minutes from Whistler, with pickups from Whistler and downtown Vancouver.
Small groups, big terrain
The day starts with a safety briefing, transceiver practice and gear fitting before the first flight. From there it is runs, with the guide picking terrain to suit the group and the snow: glaciers and open bowls on clear days, trees when the light is flat. Lunch is an alpine picnic around 1pm, out of the helicopter, in the snow.
The Six Run package guarantees six runs with four guests and a guide and lets you add more on the day. Semi-Private pairs two groups of four sharing one helicopter; Private gives your group of four the aircraft and the guide to yourselves. The Downtown Vancouver package departs from Coal Harbour for anyone staying in the city.
Heli-skiing is backcountry skiing. You need to be a confident, fit skier or rider who is comfortable off-piste in variable snow. Phantom fits everyone with avalanche transceivers, and its guides are ACMG and AMGA certified.
