Aerial Obstacle Course
Rope bridges, balance beams and swinging logs in the canopy, with a separate course for children
The aerial obstacle course is the activity for the people in the group who want to do something rather than ride something. Harnessed and clipped to a continuous safety line, you make your way through a series of rope bridges, cargo nets, wobbling logs and elevated platforms strung between the trees, with each section a little harder than the last.
The Adventure Group runs two courses at Basecamp on Cougar Mountain. The Full Course is higher and longer and open to all skill levels; the Kids Course is set lower with easier elements for younger children. Both come with a guide and a proper briefing, and both are bundled with the Basecamp Day Ticket.
Clip in, step off
Every session begins on the ground with the harness, a demonstration of the clip system and a practice element at knee height. From there the guides send groups into the trees a few at a time. The elements progress in difficulty as you go, so the first bridge is a confidence builder and the later ones are a proper workout for balance and nerve.
Nobody has to complete everything. Guides are on hand throughout and there are ways down at intervals, which is what makes it work for mixed groups of teenagers, parents and the occasional grandparent.
Reach is the measure that matters rather than age: 4 feet 7 inches (140 cm) for the Kids Course and 5 feet 11 inches (180 cm) for the Full Course, measured standing flat-footed with an arm raised. Weight must be between 60 and 250 pounds.
Full Course
The complete high course for all skill levels. Reach of 5'11" (180 cm) required.
Kids Course
Set lower in the trees with easier elements. Reach of 4'7" (140 cm) required.
