White Water Rafting

Class 2 and 3 rapids on the Green River, fifteen minutes from the Village

Summer · Green River, north of Whistler

Whistler's own rafting trip runs on the Green River, the glacier-fed water that leaves Green Lake and heads north toward Pemberton. The Adventure Group runs it as Wedge Whitewater Rafting, and it is the only rafting in the valley that does not involve a long drive to another river.

The rapids are class 2 and 3, which is the sweet spot for a family or a first-timer: enough waves to soak everyone and make the raft buck, not so much that anyone needs experience. Guides have been running this stretch for more than twenty years.

Wetsuits on, paddles up

Check-in is at Basecamp on Cougar Mountain, where you change into a wetsuit, booties and helmet and get the safety talk. A short shuttle takes the group to the put-in on the river. From there it is roughly an hour of paddling, with the guide calling strokes from the back of the raft and the rapids coming in sets between calmer stretches of forest and mountain views.

Class 2 and 3 water means waves, a few drops and plenty of spray, with time between features to look up at Wedge Mountain and the Green River valley. Everyone paddles; nobody is a passenger. Expect to be wet through by the end and warmer than you feared.

The trip is bundled with the Basecamp Day Ticket, so there is time either side for axe throwing, wiffle golf or the nature trail while the rest of the group dries off.
