River of Golden Dreams

A guided canoe paddle from Alta Lake through Whistler's wetlands toward Green Lake

Summer · Alta Lake to Green Lake

The River of Golden Dreams is Whistler's gentlest adventure and one of its most photographed. It winds from the north end of Alta Lake through wetlands and overhanging willows, past lily pads and beaver lodges, to the glacial water of Green Lake, and for most of its length the current does the work.

Canadian Wilderness Adventures runs it as a guided three-hour tour. You get paddling instruction on the lake before you set off, a guide who knows the channel and the history of the valley, and a shuttle from the Village at the start and the finish.

Lily Pad Lane and the slow water

The tour begins on historic Alta Lake, where the guide covers the strokes you need and a little of the story of Rainbow Lodge and the lake that started Whistler. From the lake the canoes slip into the river channel, which narrows quickly into what the guides call Lily Pad Lane: shallow, clear and lined with greenery on both sides.

Families of ducks and geese are almost guaranteed. Bears and eagles are not, but they are seen often enough that it is worth keeping a camera to hand. The mountains stay in view the whole way, with Whistler and Blackcomb behind you and Wedge ahead.

Water levels drop through the summer. From roughly mid July the river runs low enough that the tour includes a short portage of about 600 metres around the beaver dams, and in early spring the current is faster. If you want the classic, lazy version, book for June or early July. The Alta Lake Guided Canoe Tour is the alternative if the river is not running.
