Stand-Up Paddleboarding
Flat water, mountain views and a board by the hour from Wayside Park on Alta Lake
Alta Lake is made for paddleboarding. It is long, mostly sheltered and ringed with parks and docks, and on a still summer morning the mountains reflect in it from end to end. Whistler Eco Tours rents boards from Wayside Park on the south-west shore by the hour, half day and full day, with life jackets and paddles included and a choice of regular and large boards.
If you have never stood on one, the two-hour Learn to SUP lesson with a Paddle Canada certified guide gets most people paddling confidently in the first half hour. Guided lake paddles are available for anyone who would rather be shown around.
Rent, learn or be guided
Hourly rentals are walk-in, first come first served, from the rental base at Wayside Park, which has a beach, a dock, washrooms and parking. Half-day and full-day rentals can be booked ahead, which is worth doing on a hot weekend. Everything you need comes with the board: paddle, PFD and a quick briefing on the lake.
The Learn to SUP lesson runs in the morning for a minimum of two adults and covers standing up, turning, paddling into wind and getting back on after a fall, which is the part everyone secretly wants to know. From there, the north end of the lake is the calmest and the River of Golden Dreams leaves from it.
Guided tours include a round-trip shuttle from the Eco Tours office in the Village, and private tours can pick up from your accommodation. A liability waiver is signed for all guided sessions.
