Snowmobiling
From a two-hour first ride to a full-day expedition, on Sproatt, Blackcomb and the Callaghan
Canadian Wilderness Adventures has snowmobile tours on three sides of the valley: Sproatt Mountain, the Callaghan Valley and Blackcomb. The range runs from a two-hour introduction on groomed trails, where nobody has ever ridden before, to eight-hour expeditions into alpine bowls that only a handful of people see each winter.
The trick is choosing the right one. The list below is ordered roughly from easiest to hardest. If you are unsure, the Callaghan Cruiser and Mountain Explorer are the safe first choices; the breakfast and steak-night tours add a meal to a solid ride; everything marked advanced expects you to have ridden before and to be fit enough for a long day.
Groomed trails, gold mines and alpine bowls
Every tour begins with a shuttle to the staging area, a safety briefing and time on the machines before the trail starts. Beginners ride groomed forest trails in the Callaghan Valley or on Blackcomb; the Wilderness Run adds the historic NorthAir gold mine site; the longer tours climb Sproatt Mountain to open bowls with 360-degree views of the Coast Mountains.
Children ride as passengers with a paying adult, and on the Callaghan Cruiser ages five to twelve ride free. Passengers need to be at least 48 inches tall to see over the driver, with a little flexibility between 43 and 47 inches at the guide's discretion.
Snowmobiling is physical. Steering a sled through powder uses your whole body, and the advanced tours are long days at altitude, so be honest about fitness and experience when you book. The guides will happily move a group to a different tour if the first choice is not the right one.
