Snowshoeing
Giant cedars, the Medicine Trail and a campfire at the caboose to finish
Snowshoeing is the winter activity for people who want the forest rather than the crowd. No lift lines, no learning curve and no noise: within a few minutes of strapping in you are walking between cedars, firs and hemlocks that were already old when Whistler was a fishing lodge, with the snow soaking up every sound.
Canadian Wilderness Adventures runs its snowshoe tours on the Medicine Trail in the Callaghan Valley, about twenty minutes south of the Village. The classic tour is three hours including the shuttle, at a pace that suits every ability, and it finishes with a light snack around the campfire at the caboose.
The Medicine Trail
The guide sets a gentle pace through the old growth, stopping to explain how the forest works and the traditional uses of the plants along the way. Teas brewed from those plants are part of the tour. Look up: the canopy is a long way overhead, and the biggest cedars are wide enough that a group can stand around one.
The Sauna Experience by Snowshoe adds time in wood-fired barrel saunas in the forest after the walk, on the mid-afternoon departure. The Canadian Campfire Cookout by Snowshoe is an evening tour for private groups, by headlamp, finishing at a historic trapper's cabin with smokies, chili and s'mores over the fire.
Snowshoes are provided and take about thirty seconds to learn. Sturdy waterproof boots and gaiters or snow pants make the difference between a comfortable afternoon and a cold one.
