Vallea Lumina Winter

The night walk in the snow: a shorter, flatter trail, earlier start times and a warm-up at base camp

Winter · Cougar Mountain, after dark

In winter Vallea Lumina becomes something gentler and, for many people, better. The trail is shortened to about a kilometre and groomed and gritted for snow, the steep sections and most of the stairs are taken out, extra lighting is added for the season and the dark arrives early enough that the first entries leave around 5pm.

That makes it the easiest evening out in Whistler with young children or older relatives: a 30 to 40 minute walk through an illuminated snowy forest, a warm drink at base camp beforehand, and back in the Village in time for dinner. A complimentary shuttle runs from the Village.

Snow, light and an earlier night

The story is the same as the summer walk: two hikers, a hidden valley and a trail of light and sound that leads you there through base camp, outpost, field lab and forest guardians to the legend at the end. In snow the scenes read differently, with the projections lighting the drifts and the trees holding the colour.

The winter trail is mostly flat with one staircase and is levelled and gritted after every snowfall, so ordinary winter boots are enough. It is still an outdoor walk on a mountain in winter: dress for the temperature and bring gloves, because the whole point is to stop and look.

Strobe lighting and loud sound effects are used throughout. Strollers and umbrellas are not permitted; a baby carrier is the way to bring the youngest.
